Human Services

The Human Services Division operates as a conduit between the City of Danbury and its residents. The Human Services Division oversees programs and services that improve the well-being of individuals, families, and the community.

A key component of the Social Services Division is the Back Rent program. We assist Danbury residents who due to unforeseen circumstances have fallen behind in rent payments. The key requirement, without exception, is the recipient is actively working and/or has supplemental income to maintain rent going forward.

Other services offered:
- Housing Advocacy
- Paperwork for State and Federal assistance
- Emergency Prescription Voucher
- Home Visits
- Application screening for eye examinations and eyeglasses through the Lions Club of Danbury
- Home visits to the Elderly and Homebound

The City of Danbury operates a shelter at 41 New Street to serve those who are temporarily homeless; there is a maximum stay of 30 days. All women and men seeking shelter due to an emergency MUST contact 211 for a personal appointment and assessment for immediate assistance.

The women and men are required to engage in:
- Chores
- Counseling for addiction and/or mental health, if applicable
- Apply for State and Federal assistance
- Seek employment if applicable
- Be sober at all times

The City Shelter serves as a portal for outside agencies to provide services on site.

Our Social Services Division would not be complete without the individuals, families, schools, businesses, churches, and organizations that generously donate during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
