Snow Emergency System

The City of Danbury currently uses a three-level snow emergency system to assist our emergency services and public works crews during inclement winter weather. The following information will help you with defining the necessary precautions to ensure that our streets are clean and safe during and immediately following a snow or ice storm.

A. Notification Procedure

The notification procedure for a Snow Emergency includes the utilization of the City’s Danbury Alert (Everbridge) notification system that will notify areas affected by an emergency. Residents will receive a message, based on their preferred delivery method, notifying them of a Snow Emergency.

B. Snow Emergency: Level 1

1. All vehicles are prohibited from parking on City streets.

2. All vehicles must be removed no later than two (2) hours after the start of a winter storm and may be returned after all snow-and-ice-control operations have ceased.

3. If residents have no other place to park, the Patriot Parking Garage will be open free of charge for the duration of the storm.

4. Vehicles on City streets will be ticketed and towed.

C. Snow Emergency: Level 2

1. All vehicles are prohibited from parking on City streets.

2. In addition, it is recommended that residents not travel on City streets unless it is absolutely necessary.

3. All vehicles must be removed no later than two (2) hours after the start of a winter storm, and may be returned after all snow-and-ice-control operations have ceased.

4. If residents have no other place to park, the Patriot Parking Garage will be open free of charge for the duration of the storm.

5. Vehicles on City streets will be ticketed and towed.

D. Snow Emergency: Level 3

1. All vehicles are prohibited from parking on City streets.

2. Travel on city streets is restricted to emergency vehicles, four wheel drive, and emergency personnel only. Level 3 is to be used in extreme situations only.

E. Removal of snow, ice from sidewalks (per Code of Ordinances):

1. Every person owning or occupying any land fronting upon any sidewalk within the City shall, within four (4) hours of daylight immediately following the cessation of any fall of snow, or accumulation of ice thereon, cause the same to be removed, so that travel upon said sidewalk shall not be obstructed, dangerous or inconvenient, and upon failure so to do within the time limit, shall be punished as provided in Section 1-7

2. No person shall place or cause to be placed any snow, ice, sand or debris that obstructs, may obstruct or otherwise interfere with safe passage upon, or otherwise interfere with the regular and proper maintenance or drainage of any street, road, public highway, sidewalk or other public property in the City.

3. Any Danbury Police Officer or the Director of Public Works or his designee, shall be authorized to issue citations providing for penalties of ninety dollars ($100.00) per violation for violations of this section.
