About Us:
The Danbury Police Department has been providing a wide range of proactive police services since its’ formal beginnings in 1884. We have seen the department grow from its original nine (9) officers to a current staffing level consisting of one hundred seventy-four (174) sworn and civilian personnel.
It is the mission of the Danbury Police Department to provide an environment for the people of Danbury that is free from the fear of crime, where people can enjoy a high quality of life and the community can prosper. The Danbury Police Department is dedicated to delivering the finest community oriented police services to the people of Danbury. In partnership with the community, we will prevent and deter crime, enforce laws, maintain order and safety, and be visible and accessible to all we serve.
The Danbury Police Department consists of four (4) major divisions, all of which work together to provide the citizens of the greater Danbury area with professional and compassionate police services. The Patrol Division is the largest division within the department and is tasked with providing the community with a sensitive and proactive law enforcement presence. As with any department, the Patrol Division is considered the “backbone of the department”. Within this division is the Community Policing Unit, this unit is solely dedicated to improving the safety and quality of life for Danbury’s residents. Administered by this unit are such programs as the School Resource Officer Program, U.N.I.T. Liaison, Community Conditions Unit, and the Police Athletic League. It is this unit that is responsible for coordinating and directing the department’s community policing efforts.
The Investigative Division is responsible for the investigations of crimes and criminal activity affecting the quality of life in our community. Within this division we have detectives specifically dedicated to investigate White Collar, Narcotic & Vice and Juvenile crimes. In addition to this, the Investigative Division coordinates the department’s 287g program and oversees the Crime Scene Unit.
The Administrative Division is tasked with the responsibility over overseeing the department’s Emergency Communications, Records Unit and Property Management.
Rounding out the department is the Professional Standards Division, this division is solely dedicated to improving the integrity and quality of policing services delivered to the public. This division administers and coordinates all training for department personnel. This division also oversees the Accreditation Manager, Animal Control and the Internal Affairs functions for the department.
In support of the above division, the department recognizes the need for specialized emergency service and addresses these needs through its Emergency Service Unit. This unit consists of tactical operations, hostage negotiators, mobile operation center, K-9 handlers and an underwater operations section. The Danbury Police Department stands prepared and is capable of handling any type of emergency our community may face.
Our Accomplishments:
Recently the department has taken a leadership role with the introduction of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) within its patrol fleet and the region. This state of the art technology will allow officers to be more proactive in addressing motor vehicle violations. Thus, allowing for the removal of unregistered and uninsured vehicles from our roadways. It will also increase our community’s safety by identifying known criminals and allowing officers to engage them before they have a chance to engage in further criminal activity. There will be a improvement in the collaborative enforcement efforts among surrounding towns and it will improve multijurisdictional communication.
In closing, Danbury consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in our state and among cities of similar size across our nation. This is due in part to the department’s commitment to proactive enforcement activities, prevention strategies and the implementation of technology. The department cannot take all the credit for this success, but must recognize the citizen and residents of the greater Danbury community, for it is them who make Danbury one of the finest places to live in the country.
