The mission of the Danbury Police Department is to provide an environment for the people of Danbury that is free from the fear of crime, where people can enjoy a high quality of life, and the entire community can prosper. The Danbury Police Department executes its mission from a new state-of-the-art 75,000 square foot headquarters building on Main Street in downtown Danbury. We employ a fleet of over 100 vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and specialty vehicles to patrol the 44 square miles that are under our protection.
Despite all the modern equipment and technology, it is our people that make our organization great. Our employees are involved in the community both on and off duty. Our managers and supervisors are system thinkers, responsive to the constantly changing needs of the community. They employ best practices in law enforcement, manage up, and break down the silos that often form in large government agencies.
It is the dedicated men and women in uniform of the Danbury Police Department who patrol our streets 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the hard working plain-clothes detectives who work long and tedious hours to solve our most complex crimes and bring those responsible to justice. It is the personnel in Records, Administration and Professional Standards who provide the best possible support to our field operations. It is the collective effort and unwavering dedication of our employees who consistently make Danbury the safest large city in Connecticut.
Partnerships make the difference for our organization and contribute to our high level of community trust and support. We enjoy an enviable level of support from our public safety partners. These include firefighters, EMTs and Public Works employees. The winter of 2013-14 was exceptionally difficult and, as always, Public Works did a phenomenal job of keeping our streets open.
In the calendar year of 2013, Danbury was again recognized as one of the safest cities in the country based on crime statistics. Also in 2013, we answered over 55,000 calls for service and issued over 6300 traffic citations.
Our Traffic Unit took advantage of federal grant dollars to address the safety issue of distracted driving. Our Community Conditions Unit worked closely with City Center Danbury, responding to quality of life concerns of its members with foot and bicycle patrol.
In early 2014, we implemented a new computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and records management system. This system brings new tools to the Danbury police such as an automatic vehicle locator (AVL) system for squad cars and electronic citation management. We look forward to the consolidation of emergency dispatching in Danbury and the state implementation of the next generation of the E9-1-1 reporting system.
Also in early 2014, we issued new TASERS to all field officers and continued training for responding rapidly to gun violence in our schools, malls, and public gathering places. Our partners in Finance and Human Resources are working hard with us to address a large number of retirements projected for the next year.
